PRP Injections For Hair Loss
What is platelet-rich plasma?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a component of your blood that contains a high amount of platelets, tiny blood cells with restorative properties. PRP is known to play an important role in rejuvenation and growth throughout the body.
How does PRP therapy affect hair loss?
PRP can improve the appearance of your hair by stimulating growth in your hair follicles. When PRP is infused into your scalp, the presence of PRP sends a signal for reparative cells to rapidly increase, especially at the injection site. This can revive the cells that comprise your hair follicles, revitalizing your hair growth.
What happens during a PRP therapy appointment?
When you come in for PRP therapy, Dr. Bopp’s team will draw a small amount of your blood while you are seated comfortably. Then, while you rest, the blood is processed by inserting it into a centrifuge, which is a device that spins at high speeds in order to separate the different parts of your blood. Finally, the PRP product is injected into your scalp. The PRP therapy contains a rejuvenating mixture of platelets and cells that, amazingly, is derived from your own body.
Is PRP treatment painful?
PRP therapy is a relatively quick and low-pain procedure. Dr. Bopp will ensure that you are comfortable and hydrated before she begins. The extraction itself should take less than five minutes, and you will have time to rest afterward. The following injection, which can happen on the same day, is painless in most cases. Dr. Bopp can apply a mild anesthetic around the injection area if you are sensitive to pain.
How soon after my appointment can I expect to see results?
Dr. Bopp usually tells patients to expect to see results in 4-6 weeks. Depending on your level of hair loss, she can also schedule recurring PRP therapy appointments for you, increasing your chances of regaining a full head of hair.
Can I do anything else to increase my hair growth?
At your appointment, Dr. Barbara Bopp will discuss other treatments that can be used at the same time as PRP therapy, such as vitamin and probiotic regimens, light therapy, and/or lifestyle changes to promote hair growth.
