What cosmetic concerns are treated with eyelid surgery?

before and after eyelid surgery

Eyelid surgery, called blepharoplasty, is used to improve the appearance of your eyelids. During blepharoplasty, Dr. Felix Bopp can also improve your eye function by removing excess or sagging skin that affects your vision.  Blepharoplasty effectively treats the effect of time. As you get older, the shape of your eyelids changes as muscles weaken and facial fat is affected by time and gravity.  Eyelid surgery treats these concerns:

  • Puffy eyelids due to fatty deposits
  • Bags under your eyes
  • Drooping eyelids
  • Excess skin on lower eyelid
  • Fine wrinkles on the lower eyelid
  • Loose or sagging upper eyelids
  • Excess skin on upper eyelid
  • Fatty deposits that make eyelids look puffy
  • Bags under your eyes
  • Drooping eyelids

  • Fine wrinkles on the lower eyelid

  • Excess skin on upper eyelid

What happens during eyelid surgery?

Before scheduling eyelid surgery, you’ll have a consultation with Dr. Bopp so that he can thoroughly evaluate your eyes and talk with you about the results you want to achieve. He’ll also check for any issues with producing normal tears and check for underlying health or vision problems.

Dr. Bopp can perform plastic surgery on your upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both at the same time. Upper eyelid surgery is typically done using an incision made in the crease of the eyelid. For lower eyelid procedures, the incision usually goes below the eyelashes. The goal is always to place incisions in areas where the scar is concealed.

After making an incision, Dr. Bopp can remove or reposition fat deposits, remove excess skin, and tighten muscles. As swelling gradually goes down and the incisions heal, you’ll begin to see your rejuvenated appearance.

What should you expect after eyelid surgery?

Dr. Bopp will talk with you about recovery time. Although some postoperative effects are expected, they’re usually minor. You may have some swelling, bruising, watering eyes, or sensitivity to light. These symptoms should go away within two weeks.

Even though you’ll be ready to face the public in one week, complete healing often takes a few months. Meanwhile, you’ll have important self-care instructions to follow. You’ll need to clean your eyelids with prescribed ointments, avoid strenuous activities for a short time, and sleep with your head higher than your chest for a few days following eyelid surgery.
